Cherry Chocolate Cookies

My sister Megan shared this recipe with me many years ago and it is a favorite of mine to make during the holidays. If you’ve ever enjoyed eating chocolate covered cherries, this is a treat for you. They’re super decadent and really take me back to my childhood when we enjoyed those sweet treats as a family.

3/4 cup softened butter

1 cup sugar

1 1/2 tsp vanilla

1 1/2 cup flour

1/2 cup cocoa powder

1/4 tsp salt

1/4 tsp baking powder

1/4 tsp baking soda

Small jar Maraschino cherries

3/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk

Sprinkles (optional)

Using a hand or stand mixer, blend the butter, sugar and vanilla until light and fluffy. Add the flour, cocoa, salt, baking powder & soda and beat until thoroughly mixed. Form cookies into one inch balls or use a small fruit baller scoop, just big enough to hold a cherry in the center. Press one cherry down into the center of each cookie. Place 12 cookies on a parchment covered cookie sheet. Bake for 14 minutes at 350 degrees.

While cookies are baking, melt the chocolate, milk and a heavy splash of the cherry juice in the microwave for 30 seconds at a time. Stir and cook until mixture is completely melted and smooth. Once cookies have completely cooled, drizzle the top of each cookie with the chocolate mixture. You can use a spoon or a piping bag to do this. Top with sprinkles (if desired) and let cool completely. Store in an airtight container for up to three days. Enjoy!
