BéchameL sauce
A luscious white sauce made with non-fat milk, you’d never guess it.
This sauce is super easy to make and goes well with so many different types of foods. You can use it in a white sauced lasagna, serve it over mashed potatoes or use it in virtually any casserole. You can also add pretty much any flavoring you want to it, super versatile. This recipe makes just over one cup of sauce. I triple the recipe when making my Sweet Potato Lasagna or a big casserole.
2 TBsp Butter or Oil (I use avocado, canola or olive)
2 TBsp Flour
11/4 cups Non-Fat Milk
1/4 cup Grated Cheese (I use Quesadilla Melting cheese, but any good melting cheese will be delicious)
Salt & Pepper
In a large skillet add the oil or butter and start heating over low/med heat. While you do this, heat your milk in the microwave. You need to get it hot, but don’t boil it. Once the oil/butter is heated add the flour and whisk until well combined. Cook for 3-4 minutes stirring frequently, but don’t let it brown. Add the hot milk and whisk until combined, whisk often until the sauce is thickened. Bring to a boil then lower heat and let simmer. Add the cheese to the sauce during the last two minutes of cooking and whisk lightly until melted. Salt & pepper to taste or add other flavorings. You can also add in cooked meats and vegetables. I love this sauce with sauteed spinach and garlic. The picture below shows the sauce with ground turkey, spinach and garlic. Enjoy!
